“Bucket”
was originally called “12 Ways To Lose”, then “Fuck
It”, before settling on “Bucket”.
Only
some way into production was it decided that “Bucket” was
to be a feature film. Early on, we were simply making various short
films that weren’t overtly connected.
The
first episode shot was “my coffee doesn’t taste the same
without you” with Andy and Xsara as the leads. This footage was
scrapped and justified in being “camera tests”.
“Bucket”
features 11 brief appearances of a “Shadow-character”
(one in every episode except the last). Nobody is yet to spot them all
on the first viewing.
Each
episode contains at least one “fuck it”: either verbally
or visually.
Each
episode also features at least one verbal or visual manifestation of
that particular episode’s individual number.
The
red lounge was painted red on the condition that it was returned to
a neutral colour before Munky returned from holiday. It is still red.
The
sound of the fruit-machine’s jackpot is actually the death metal
screamer “Pigs” by Bill.
The
decision to have Junior stood at the house’s front-door on a beach
was half Surrealist spontaneity and half due to having run out of available
locations.
“Hannah”
was selected as the mystery character’s name (who may or may not
exist) as it is a palindrome and represents the narrative of “Hannah
close”.
The
episode name “Hannah close” was found by looking at a road
map. When scouting the road called Hannah Close, Mark realised that
he’d actually been stuck there for several hours just weeks before,
as it is the Ikea pick-up point. It remains unclear if Mark’s
experience of being stranded at Hannah Close with too much furniture
to fit into a single vehicle had any influence on the script or choice
of name.
“Ephemera”,
the song that the band perform in “Hannah close” was specifically
written by Bill for “Bucket”.
The
sequence in which the Priest stands on his head was not planned. As
Junior rightfully says in the blooper reel: “I love it, there’s
no reason for it, it’s not even in the script. He’s here,
so let’s make him stand on his head like a cunt”.
The
concept of a car only being able to reverse is based on a true story
told to Mark by Annika Skoog.
The
scene in which “the slapper” slaps the carer (Brian Reece)
and “the aggressor” attacks him in the pub was unplanned.
Louisa and Franky just happened to be drinking there at the time.
We
filmed a battered and bloodied Clint returning upstairs in the elevator
in the Maltings shopping centre, St Albans (obviously without permission).
The elevator doors unexpectedly opened to reveal a sweet little old
lady who saw Clint, screamed, and ran away.
The
shots of Clint washing his face underwater were achieved using the fish-tank
from “my coffee doesn’t taste the same without you”.
The
appearance of the police car in “chop-suey” was accidental.
We were filming the car skidding and the police turned up. They didn’t
even ask what we were doing and drove off.
The
bar in the opening of Take Heart is actually in Mark’s lounge.
Clint’s father, Gordon, set up a portable bar: we got drunk.
Stasia
Buckle who plays the girl’s house-mate in “take heart”
was to play Hannah in “Hannah close” but Hannah was altogether
cut out of the script. She also popped up as a "Shadow
Character".
The
filming of Bill, Al and Clint playing the brief section of the song
"Take Heart" was such as shambles that Mark edited the many
bloopers together as "The Hooper Reel". This featured as a
bonus feature on the "Bucket" DVD.
A
working fan featured in the original “my coffee doesn’t
taste the same without you” with Andy and Xsara. The idea for
inclusion of the broken fan in the final version was due to Mark actually
breaking the fan between shooting the two versions.
Ian
stabbing his hand when doing the washing up was never in the script.
It was improvised upon receipt of a new CD from Bill featuring the track
“Compulsion”. The song’s lyrics were used as the script
for this sequence. The same sequence was later re-created with Clint
for the video for “Compulsion” from “Palette”.o
“Circulation”
was the first script written although it was never intended to be a
part of “Bucket”. The original script dates back to about
2002.
The
escort arrives at the carer’s house in a rainstorm that is actually
Ian hanging out of an upstairs window with a hosepipe running through
a colander.
The
interior shots of the tent took place in Mark’s lounge.
The
college students in “the boy that should be k(ill)ing” were
all actually Mark’s students.
The
sequence in which Dora’s room goes up in flames took place in
Mark’s back garden.
